Dear Students & Parents,
Welcome to the 2010-2011 school year.  We hope each of you had a terrific summer!  We would like to take this time to mention our policies and goals regarding your child’s fourth grade year.

SUPPLIES       We expect our students to be prepared to learn; therefore, your child needs to bring the necessary supplies and books to and from school every day.  Please check with your child periodically to see if he/she needs any supplies.  SUPPLY LIST ATTACHED

HOMEWORK    Points will be given for homework assignments.  Please call or email me with any concerns about homework.  However, your child is still responsible for completing homework every day. Assignments are given on a daily basis.  Multiplication tables are to be completed every day.

TESTS               Encourage your child to make sure he/she copies the notes from class.  Most test will be given on Fridays.  Students will also receive one homework assignment in Reading Comprehension and Math WEEKLY that will count as a test grade. 

UNIFORMS       We expect our students to be prepared to learn; therefore, your child needs to be in uniform everyday.  SPENCER UNIFORMS SHIRTS COST $10.00 

GRADING SCALE      
A = 95-100         A - Substantially exceeding the standard.
B = 88-94        B - Exceeding the standard.
C = 81-87         C - Meeting the standard.
D = 75-80         D - Less than acceptable performance on the standard.
F = 74-0         F - Does not meet the standard.

PARENT CONTACT       Parents will receive text or e-mails for the following:
missing homework - lost or forgotten materials - improper language or behavior

GOALS FOR THE YEAR

Children through the series experience authentic literature in the form of poetry, folktales, nonfiction, fiction, biographies, fantasies and plays. Reading fluency will develop and improve as students are

presented with the following skills:

 

• Understanding cause and effect

• Predicting

• Understanding plot

• Identifying figurative language

• Sequencing events of a story

• Analyzing details

• Using context clues and other resources to enhance vocabulary

• Identifying the characteristics of fiction

Fourth grade students use writing to convey meaning.

Students will:

Fourth grade students will acquire knowledge of mathematics and the ability to apply math skills to solve problems through the use of the text, extended activities, and hands on experiences. They will also learn and practice through various websites.

• Multiply and divide 2, 3 and 4 digit

numbers

• Describe and use patters

capacity and weight

Science

Technology and Reference Skills

Students use concrete, hands-on experiences to understand science in the physical and natural world around them. They learn through observing,

predicting, questioning and explaining. Students will:

 

• Explain relationship of living things to

their environment

• Explain the water cycle

• Identify effects on water, rock cycle

• Describe factors affecting ecosystems

• Know major organ systems

Fourth grade students will learn, study, retain and use information from a variety of technology sources.

Students will:

 

•Receive e-mail accounts and learn how to use them to communicate on the internet.

• Learn to create folders, files

and change computer settings.

• Continue to build internet navigational skills and begin to use internet search engines.

• Gain skill in “correction” and review tools using Microsoft word

• Learn basic animation for project use.

• Make brochures, newsletters and other

project types using various software

systems.

• Practice typing proficiency and proper

keyboard/keypad use.

 

 

• Showing an interest in homework and school activities

• Provide a quiet place and sufficient

uninterrupted time to do school work

• Encouraging good nutrition, rest and

exercise

• Staying in touch with the school
